Effectiveness of triptans:
Randomized, clinical trials and open-label studies that evaluated triptans in migraine treatment have shown that triptans are effective in relieving pain and reducing total lost workday equivalents.
Based on this research, treating migraineurs with triptans will reduce total lost workday equivalents by 49%. See the evidence.
The model will use these values to calculate the impact of treatment unless you replace them.
Cost of treatment:
In addition, the model includes the offsetting costs of triptan treatment. The average cost of triptan treatment is higher for females than for males because, on average, women use more pills per year to treat their migraine headaches. The default value used in the model is $ per male migraineur and $ per female migraineur.
These average treatment costs include both the cost the employer or health plan will pay as well as the employee portion of the cost. The employee shares in cost through a co-pay. The default value used by this calculator is $ per prescription. If your employee co-pay is different, please change the value and this will be incorporated in the model. The average annual treatment cost to the employer is $ per male migraineur and $ per female migraineur. Click here to see more detail about treatment costs.
The cost to the employer will be used to calculate the net gain for employers of treating migraine. Why is it that only triptans are included in the model? Click here for an explanation.
Who gets treated:
Not everyone who suffers from migraines is appropriate for triptan treatment. In the model we assume that 75% of all migraineurs will benefit from treatment with triptans. Find out why these figures are used.
